What type of insurance does my coffee shop need?

There’s nothing I love more than going to a local coffee shop on the weekends to read a good book. There is something about the atmosphere that makes it perfect to relax and catch up with some friends.  The smell of the fresh coffee grounds, the whoosh of the steamer heating up the milk for my latte, and the low buzz of people chatting just makes this place so homey.

Visting my local coffee shop is so vital in my weekend routine. Everyone is aware of the struggles that small businesses are faced with during this pandemic, staying afloat is no easy feat.  In addition to spending more time and money on creative seating and implementing new procedures to keep everything “Covid friendly”, the business still must maintain adequate insurance coverage.  We want to speak to some coverages that are important to have in place.

What are the primary insurance policies that are important for your coffee shop? Read below for some examples and know that each business is different and may require more or less coverage.

1. General Liability Insurance

Often referred to as Slip and Fall insurance, this protects you and your business should your most dedicated customer take a tumble while rushing in for his freshly brewed coffee.

2. Property Insurance

Your shop’s physical structure needs to be insured should you forget to turn the burner off when you close down for the evening. This also provides coverage for your business property inside, such as the furniture, equipment, and the countless stacks of coffee cups.

3. Worker’s Compensation

If your employee, Shawn, were to burn his arm on that scorching hot burner, a worker’s compensation policy would provide wage replacement and medical benefits.

4. Product Liability

It is important to have policies in place to review expiration dates and checking the temperatures of the drinks served. But as with everything, accidents can happen. We all know about the infamous McDonald’s lawsuit, which ended up costing them over $450,000 in the end. Serving delicious coffee to customers is how your business runs, while also the biggest risk you face as a business owner.

5. Cyber Security

The boss lady stores her employees’ personal data on-site and utilizes a great rewards program for her customers, not realizing that she is putting her business at risk if she does not have cyber insurance. Cyber insurance is necessary whether this data is stored on the cloud or in paper files.

6. Auto Liability

Auto liability coverage for a business is there to protect your vehicles and other parties that might be involved in an auto incident. Suppose Thomas uses the shop’s delivery car to make a quick trip to the store to grab coffee filters, skids on ice, and hits a telephone pole. In that case, there’s auto insurance is in place to cover repairs to the company vehicle and any damage to the light pole.
