Tornado Safety Tips for the Workplace: How to Be Prepared

By March 10, 2023March 11th, 2023Insurance, Weather

Developing a tornado safety plan for a small business is critical to protecting your employees,

customers, and visitors. Here are some steps you may take to build a tornado protection strategy

for your small business.

Identify a Safety Location

Select a safe location within your organization where employees, customers, and visitors

can take shelter in the event of a tornado. This location should be identified, preferably

in an inner room or hallway away from windows and entrances.

Communicate the Plan

During onboarding and training, communicate the tornado safety plan to all employees,

including new hires. Make sure everyone knows where the designated safe spot is and

how to get there quickly and safely.

Post Safety Procedures

Display safety instructions and evacuation routes in visible areas throughout your

organization, such as break rooms, restrooms, and near exits.

Have Emergency Supplies

Prepare an emergency supply kit, bottled water, nonperishable food, blankets,

flashlights, and a battery-powered radio at your selected safe spot.

Stay Informed

Keep up to date on tornado watches and warnings in your area. Ensure that you have a

method of receiving notifications, such as a weather radio or smartphone app.

Designate Roles and Responsibilities

Designate specific responsibilities for employees during a tornado emergency, such as

who will direct everyone to the safe spot, who will account for everyone’s safety, and

who will notify emergency services if necessary.

Practice Your Plan

Practice your tornado safety plan with your staff on a regular basis so that everyone

knows what to do in an emergency. Drills should be conducted to ensure that everyone

knows where to go and what to do.

Remember that being prepared is essential for remaining safe in the event of a tornado.

You may help ensure the safety of everyone in your small business by developing a

tornado safety plan and routinely rehearsing it with your staff.
