Laws on Hands Free Driving

Everyone loves to say they absolutely do not check their phone while they’re in the car or text and drive, but we’ve all been there.  Even if it’s just for two seconds to check and see who the notification is from.  States have started to mandate hands-free driving.  It’s important to know what the rules are in your state and the ones you are traveling through or to this holiday season.  Each state has a few different rules and regulations regarding hands-free driving, but there are a few generic overall regulations.

The basic law is that you must have your hands free of any devices while driving and have them on the steering wheel.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 3,000 people die in highway accidents that have to do with cellphones and devices in peoples’ hands while they are driving.

There are 16 states that currently enforce hands-free driving:  California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia.  There are another 5 states that currently enforce if you drive a state vehicle, you must remain hands-free.

How do I become hands-free?  Many peoples’ excuse when they are caught not hands-free is they are using their GPS.  A great way to still be able to use your GPS and remain hands-free is to install a car mount.  These can be found at corner stores or online and are quite easy to install.  They are also cheap so there’s really no excuse to not have one.

Learn what your state’s driving laws are.  Driving increases around the holidays and it’s important to know your state’s laws.  This also includes the laws of any states you are driving through or to.
