Spring Cleaning Tips

While taking my dog out for his morning walk today, I was pleasantly surprised to see the plethora of puddles from melting snow and ice. I found myself humming to what I soon noticed to be birds chirping. What an exciting time of year; spring is right around the corner! I genuinely look forward to spring every year and possibly get a little too overjoyed knowing that I get to embark on the cleaning journey that comes with it.

To me, spring cleaning is therapeutic. It’s the time of year I start to declutter my home from all the winter madness. Boots and oversized sweaters are stored away till next year, with all flannel linens following after laundering. While cleaning and packing up can seem like an easy task on paper, we all know there are obstacles and possibly feuds that may come with it. To help make your spring cleaning more manageable, we’ve come up with some tips on how to have a successful, stress-free spring-cleaning experience!

#1: Go room by room.  Sometimes, to clean up a mess, you have to make a mess. There’s no need to have “cleaning messes” all over the house. Start by cleaning one room at a time.

#2: Organization.  Organizing each room as you clean helps keep things neat and orderly. Also, once the room is organized, you’ll find what you need a lot faster.

#3: Get everyone involved Think of your family as your own cleaning service! Assign a job to each member of your family, such as trash duty, sweeping/mopping/vacuuming, dusting, and more. When assigning these tasks, make sure they’re ageappropriateThere’s no reason for a 5-year-old to be in charge of vacuuming; chances are you’ll have to go back and redo it. Instead, have them put all their toys into bins.

#4: Make it fun. Try making games out of cleaning and packing. My personal favorite that my kids get to have fun with is “I Spy”. Whatever one person Spy’s, the guesser has to pack or clean up that item. Fun and engaging for all, just don’t let the kids in on the secret that parents usually spy the things taking up most of the mess!

#5:  Keep cleaning products to a minimum.  You don’t need to clutter your cleaning supplies cabinet with 20 different cleaning products. Having one dependable all-purpose cleaner and a few others such as a bathroom cleaner or stainless-steel appliance cleaner is a great way to save space and money. Also, using microfiber cloths can help cut back on costs and waste of paper towels. Just make sure to avoid cross-contamination.

#6: Storage.  Keeping all winter necessities in one storage area of your home, such as the basement, helps clear the way for your spring necessities. Keep all of your storage organized as well. Placing winter holiday decorations next to the pool supplies might make for confusing times when you’re looking for them next year. Labeling the boxes in storage so they are easily accessible when it’s time to get them out is also a great idea. Try writing on painter’s tape on the outside of the boxes; if you need the box for something else, pull off the tape and write on a new piece.
