September is National Preparedness Month. It is essential to have a plan set in place so you and your family, or company, will always be prepared in case of an emergency. We have highlighted four steps to help you get started planning.
Have an emergency preparedness kit. These can either be made or purchased. In your preparedness kit, you should have supplies to last you roughly two weeks being stuck in your house and three days’ worth of supplies in the case of an evacuation. Some supplies may include; first aid kit, food, water, toiletries, a warm change of clothes, face masks, important medications, flashlights and batteries, necessary paperwork and documents, and cash.
Make an exit plan: An exit plan can be made with software, or you can draw it up yourself. This plan should include how to exit each room in the house or building to make it out safely. Remember not to use elevators in case of an emergency. Once the exit plan is created, have a meeting with everyone in the building or the household to inform them of the plan. You and your family or coworkers should practice this exiting plan roughly four times a year.
Know your area: Learning what types of natural disasters are more prevalent in your area can help with not only creating your preparedness kit, but also the planning should this event occur. If your area is prone to hurricanes, figure out where you would evacuate to. It is also important to figure out how residents in your area are alerted in case of emergencies.
Create a separation plan: Most people can be frantic in emergencies, but it is important to stay calm. In case people become separated, have a plan on what to do next. Whether it is going to the neighbors, or calling from a public telephone, always know how to get in touch. It is also crucial to know the phone numbers of people you would need to get ahold of. This goes for everyone in the household. A list could be kept in the preparedness kit or practice memorizing them.
