How many times have you walked outside in the winter and slipped on the cement because of the ice?  Last year, I was walking to my car, slipped on the cement, landed on top of my laptop, cut open my elbow, and bruised my hip.  Whether we like it or not, winter is here.  The snow is falling, the water is freezing, and the frost is biting.  While snow is quite a pretty sight and it’s fun to play in, there can be serious dangers during the winter months.  With that being said, it is important to be aware of the dangers winter brings and how to prevent them from happening.

Implement a comprehensive snow and ice removal policy.  It is very important to have a plan in place to remove snow and salt in all areas an employee may walk.  This includes parking lots, sidewalks, walkways, and any additional areas people move through.

Make salt readily available at entrances and exits.  Keep a bucket of salt and some plastic cups near all building entrances.  This encourages people to salt their way to their vehicles which keeps them and others safe.

Remain hands free when driving through the snow.  In this day in age, we all have cellphone’s or devices in our hands.  Make sure you and others you know remember to be hands free when driving through ice, snow, or areas that can be affected by the winter weather.

Place mats in doorways where ice and snow can be tracked in.  Falls caused from snow and ice not only occur outdoors, but also when floors become wet from tracked in winter weather.  Be sure to have mats in place to collect water and any snow or salt that was tracked indoors.  Mats should be routinely checked to ensure they remain in place and are replaced when needed.

Pack emergency clothes in your car.  Keeping additional emergency clothes in your car such as extra gloves, socks, pants, and coats is extremely smart in case your car breaks down unexpectedly or you run out of gas.

These winter safety tips will not only help you and your safety but also those around you.  2020 has been hard enough, end it on a good note with no winter accidents, walking or driving.
